Broad Ripple Music Fest 2009- Let The Planning Begin!

You're doing a heck of a largely,thankless job of the festival, and I'm sure no one will have a shortage of complaints. It seemed like last year's fest snuck up on me and I didn't know it was happening until a week before, but I'm fairly certain that was because I spent last year holed up in my house while renovating it. Anyway, I found two cents lying on ground today. Want it? Here it is:

1) "Didn't I Just See You Guys Play?" One of the complaints I've overheard and agree with is that many of the bands performing during the BRMF are the same bands anyone could have gone to see a week or two before the festival. I understand the inclusive, supportive nature of the festival, but when bands play a regular show a couple of weeks before their spot at the BRMF, they are weakening their draw for the fest and the drawing power of the festival overall.

2) "Let's Close a Street Down" You know what makes me feel like I'm at a bona fide festival? When I can walk in the middle of a street without fear of automobiles, music blaring through the air, a drink in hand. Which leads me to:

3) "More beer please" Indiana is known for wacky and outdated alcohol laws, but I know there's a way to put beer in hands for next to nothing, if not nothing (say, if a paper ticket is exchanged). Adding massive drink specials would encourage people to come out and help create more of a festival atmosphere. Plus, I've been feeling nickle and dimed lately. I want to go to more shows than I do, but by the time I pay cover, buy a couple of drinks, and leave a tip, my budget is reeling. Forget about buying a disc from the band. Bring on the free stuff or almost free stuff!

I am in a local band called Sanuk. We are getting some good recognition around town fan wise and stuff (from what we can tell) and would absolutely LOVE to play for the Music Fest!!

Keep me posted on any planning meetings. I'm still promoting shows through the Indianapolis Songwriters Cafe & The Big Roots Show. I'll be on board for this years BRMF.

My only compaint from last year was that Boulevard Place Cafe is really too far from BR to be part of the fest. Boulevard Place just closed so it's no longer an option.

Are you working with Midwest Emergining Artists? They have a lot of talent collected and some great opportunities for both could come out of working together.

Great suggestions from hoodoovoodoo! When the Moto GP came to town they had a street performance on Broad Ripple Ave that blew me away! Maybe a break dancing competition and other stuff to draw in the crowds!
